Grand Egyptian Museum: The Complete Visitor Guide

The Grand Egyptian Museum describes itself as the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation and is the new home of the Tutankhamun collection. It stands about 2 km from the Giza pyramids, close enough that the two fit in one day. This page explains what the museum is, what it cost, when it opened, what the tickets cost, how the hours work and which highlights deserve your time first. It also covers how to reach it from central Cairo and which luxury Egypt tours put it on the itinerary. The pyramids themselves are covered on the separate pyramids of Giza tour page.

Quick answer The GEM at a glance

The Grand Egyptian Museum is a 500,000 m2 museum beside the Giza pyramids that cost about US$1.2 billion and holds over 100,000 artefacts, including all 5,398 Tutankhamun pieces. A 2026 guide lists foreign adult tickets at EGP 1,450 and a trial-period review gave EGP 1,000, and foreign tickets are sold online only. Allow at least four hours for a visit.

Key takeaways

  • The 7-Day Private Egyptologist Tour includes the Grand Egyptian Museum, three nights on a Nile cruise and a private Egyptologist, from $1,500 per person, though the Cairo hotel and domestic flights cost extra.
  • A private guide makes the galleries far easier to read. The 3-Day Private Cairo Pyramids Tour covers Giza, Saqqara, museums, the Citadel and Old Cairo from $441 per person.
  • For how the GEM fits into a longer trip, see the Egypt itinerary page.
  • To compare what each tour costs and what it includes, start with the how to choose a luxury Egypt tour section on the homepage.

What the Grand Egyptian Museum Is

The GEM is a vast purpose-built museum on the edge of the Giza plateau, built to replace the crowded Egyptian Museum in Tahrir as Egypt's flagship collection.

Size and Cost

The site covers 500,000 m2, with 167,000 m2 built up and 81,000 m2 of floor area. Building work began in 2005 and was reported complete in 2023, and the project cost about US$1.2 billion. The museum holds over 100,000 artefacts, with over 24,000 on show in the main galleries. It has 12 permanent exhibition halls covering roughly 3100 BCE to 400 CE, four temporary exhibition halls of 5,000 m2, and 32,000 m2 of exhibition space set aside for non-permanent displays.

The support facilities are a museum in themselves. The conservation centre has 19 laboratories and six climate-controlled storage rooms, linked to the main building by a 200 m underground tunnel. A 40,000 m2 conference centre includes a 1,000-seat auditorium and three 250-seat seminar halls. There is also a 250-seat 3D theatre and a 5,000 m2 Children's Museum aimed at ages 6 to 12, with programmes split into two age tracks, 6 to 9 and 10 to 12.

The Opening

The museum had a trial opening in October 2024 and drew roughly 1.5 million visitors over its 10-month trial period. The official opening date is reported differently by different sources. Wikipedia lists it as 1 November, while one article describes a 13 November opening, so the exact day of the ceremony is unsettled.

What is clear is that about 18,000 people came on the first official day. The building was designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the Dublin firm of Roisin Heneghan and Shih-Fu Peng, and the museum describes itself as the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation. At the main gate a hanging obelisk marks the entrance.

Where It Is and How to Get There

The GEM stands about 2 km from the Giza pyramid complex, close enough that the two belong in the same day. One visitor guide puts it about 10 minutes from the pyramids by car and 30 to 45 minutes by car from central Cairo. Cairo itself sits about 13 km northeast of the pyramids, so the museum is effectively on the city's western edge. If you arrive by air, Sphinx International Airport near Giza was expanded for Grand Egyptian Museum tourism, while the main gateway is Cairo International Airport in Heliopolis, about 15 km northeast of the business district.

The plateau next door needs its own plan. The Giza Necropolis ticket is EGP 700 for foreign adults and EGP 350 for foreign students per the ministry price list, open 7:00 to 17:00, though one 2025 article lists EGP 540. For the full pyramid visit, see the pyramids of Giza tour page.

Tickets, Prices and Hours

Tickets for foreigners are sold online only through the official ticketing site, and children under 6 enter free. A 2026 visitor guide lists foreign tickets at EGP 1,450 for adults and EGP 730 for students and children aged 6 to 25 with ID. A review from the 2024 trial period gives a lower figure of EGP 1,000, and Wikivoyage's Cairo page lists LE1,490 while its Giza page lists LE1,590, so published prices disagree. Check the official ticket site before you book.

Booking runs through five steps: date, time and ticket, optional add-ons, the immersive experience, contact details, then review and payment. Two ticket types exist: an admission ticket and a guided tour ticket. The guided option is a group tour with other visitors and needs a valid ID left as a deposit for the audio device. Ticket categories are split by nationality into Egyptian or Arab, other nationality, and expatriate.

Opening Hours and Rules

On standard days the complex opens 8:30 to 19:00 and the galleries 9:00 to 18:00. On late-opening days the complex runs 8:30 to 22:00 and the galleries 9:00 to 21:00. One visitor guide names Wednesday and Saturday as the late days, but the official ticketing page lists Thursday and Friday under both the short and the extended schedules, so confirm the late days on the ticket site for your date. Last entry is one hour before gallery closing. In Ramadan, one guide says gallery hours shorten to 9:00 to 16:00.

Tickets are single entry, non-transferable and non-refundable, with no re-entry, so plan your break inside rather than stepping out. General admission includes the Khufu's Boats Museum, the commercial area and the exterior gardens. Bags, backpacks, luggage or parcels larger than 40 by 40 cm must go in the cloakroom. Flash, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, drones and live-streaming equipment are banned. Photography is banned in designated areas of the Tutankhamun galleries, and commercial photography needs prior written approval. Visitors with disabilities and ICOM members enter free under the discount rules.

The Galleries Worth Your Time

Three stops carry most of the GEM's weight: the Tutankhamun galleries, the Grand Staircase and the Khufu boats.

The Tutankhamun Galleries

The GEM's headline collection is Tutankhamun's. The museum's Tutankhamun collection numbers 5,398 pieces displayed across roughly 7,000 to 7,500 m2 of space, depending on the source. That is a sharp contrast with the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, where the Tutankhamun tomb collection is being transferred to the GEM. For scale, the Tahrir museum holds over 170,000 items in total, and it opened on 15 November 1902 in a building designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon.

Know the photography rule before you go: photography is banned in designated areas of the Tutankhamun galleries, and no flash or tripods anywhere in the museum. If the boy king's treasure is the reason for your visit, go early in the day. Last entry is one hour before gallery closing and there is no re-entry, so a rushed late arrival costs you the best rooms. Allow at least four hours for the whole museum, per Wikivoyage's Cairo listing.

The Grand Staircase and Ramesses II

Before you reach any gallery, the Grand Staircase sets the tone. It covers 6,000 m2 and rises six storeys, about 50 m, lined with more than 60 statues of kings and gods displayed in four thematic sections.

At the foot of it stands the museum's colossal Ramesses II statue, 11 m tall and weighing 83 tonnes. One trial-period review puts the weight at 85 tons, a small discrepancy worth knowing if you quote the figure. The statue greets you in the entrance zone near the Grand Hall, a 10,000 m2 atrium under a glass roof. The pyramids stand about 2 km away.

The Khufu Boat

The Khufu ships hall houses two solar boats about 4,600 years old. The famous one is about 43.4 m long and 5.9 m wide, built of Lebanon cedar from 1,224 pieces, and it is included in general admission along with the exterior gardens and the commercial area.

Its history is worth two minutes before you look at it. Engineers found the boat on 26 May 1954 when they pierced a sealed pit on the south side of the Great Pyramid, a pit closed with 42 limestone blocks laid in two groups. Workers noticed the scent of cedar wood as they opened it. The boat was fully reassembled in 1968, 14 years after discovery, and the old Giza Solar Boat Museum that housed it was built between 1961 and 1982, letting visitors see the hull from three levels. That museum closed in 2021 when the boat moved to the GEM in August 2021. Seeing a 43 m ship of Lebanon cedar is one of the quiet highlights of the collection.

Grand Egyptian Museum Tickets and Hours

The Grand Egyptian Museum sells its own tickets online, and the price depends on which source you read. Both current figures are below, with the rules that go with them.

What a Foreign Ticket Costs

Foreign visitors face two conflicting figures. A 2026 visitor guide lists EGP 1,450 for adults and EGP 730 for students and children aged 6 to 25 with ID. A review written during the 2024 trial period records EGP 1,000. The official ticketing site splits categories by nationality into Egyptian or Arab, other nationality and expatriate. Children under 6, visitors with disabilities and ICOM members enter free. General admission includes the Khufu's Boats Museum, the commercial area and the exterior gardens.

The table below gathers every published figure for a foreign adult ticket, with the source of each. Treat the higher number as the safe planning figure and expect change at the gate.

Booking Rules, Hours and Late Days

Tickets for foreigners are sold online only, through visit-gem.com, according to the 2026 visitor guide. That flow runs in five steps: date, time and ticket, optional add-ons, the immersive experience, contact details, then review and payment. Two ticket types exist on the official site, an admission ticket and a guided tour ticket. The guided ticket is a group tour with other visitors and requires a valid ID left as a deposit for the audio device. Tickets are single entry, non-transferable and non-refundable, with no re-entry.

Standard days run the complex 8:30 to 19:00 with galleries open 9:00 to 18:00, and last entry is one hour before gallery closing. On late days the complex stays open to 22:00 and galleries to 21:00, and last entry is again one hour before gallery closing. The sources disagree on which days are late: the ticketing page lists Wednesday and Saturday, while the same page also carries Thursday and Friday under both schedules, so check the date you book before planning an evening visit. One guide says gallery hours shorten to 9:00 to 16:00 during Ramadan, so a morning slot is the safer choice in that month.

Planning the Visit

The museum sits next to the pyramids, but most visitors arrive from central Cairo. This section covers the journey, the time to allow, and the other two Cairo museums worth comparing.

Getting There and How Long to Allow

The Grand Egyptian Museum stands about 2 km from the Giza pyramid complex, roughly 10 minutes away by car, and 30 to 45 minutes by car from central Cairo. Many visitors pair the museum with the plateau in one day, and the pyramids of Giza tour guide covers that side of the day. Because tickets are single entry with no re-entry, plan your whole visit before you walk in.

Allow at least four hours for the whole museum, the figure Wikivoyage gives alongside its LE 1,490 listing. With over 100,000 artefacts in the collection, more than 24,000 of them displayed in the main galleries, and the 5,398-piece Tutankhamun collection, less than four hours means skipping halls. Add the walk up the 6,000 m2 Grand Staircase, which rises six storeys or about 50 m, and a half day is realistic.

GEM, Tahrir Museum and NMEC Compared

Three museums in Cairo now split the collection between them, so the price and content comparison matters before you buy. The GEM holds the Tutankhamun galleries and a Khufu ships hall with two solar boats, the famous one about 43.4 m long and built from 1,224 cedar pieces. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, open since 1902 and holding over 170,000 items, is losing its Tutankhamun tomb collection to the GEM. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, Old Cairo, holds about 50,000 artefacts and received 22 royal mummies, 18 kings and 4 queens, in the 2021 Golden Parade.

The ministry price list sets the Egyptian Museum at EGP 550 for foreign adults and EGP 275 for students, open 9:00 to 17:00, and NMEC at EGP 500 for foreign adults and EGP 250 for students. At the 2026 guide's EGP 1,450, the GEM costs well above either older museum. All three fit easily into a Cairo stay before joining one of the luxury Egypt tours that continues south to Luxor and Aswan.

Tours That Include the GEM

Among the compared listings, the 7-Day Private Egyptologist Tour is the one whose record names the Grand Egyptian Museum explicitly. It costs $1,500 per person, runs 7 days with a private licensed Egyptologist and three nights on a Nile cruise, and holds a 4.9 rating from 70 reviews. Read the honest detail on its card: the Cairo hotel and both domestic flights are not in the price, and the operator can book them for an extra cost. Entrance fees are listed as included.

For a Cairo-only option, the 3-Day Private Cairo Pyramids Tour covers the pyramids, museums, the Citadel and Old Cairo for $441 per person. Its listing says museums but does not name the GEM, so confirm with the operator before booking if the Grand Egyptian Museum is the reason you are going. Both private itineraries sit inside the wider market of Egypt luxury tours.

GEM Tips: Do and Don't

Do

  • Do buy your ticket online in advance, because foreign tickets are sold online only through visit-gem.com and there is no walk-up option described in any source.
  • Do arrive before late afternoon, because last entry is one hour before gallery closing.
  • Do allow four hours or more, because the main galleries alone display over 24,000 artefacts and the Tutankhamun collection has 5,398 pieces.
  • Do leave bags larger than 40 by 40 cm at your hotel or in the cloakroom, because the official rules send anything bigger to the cloakroom.
  • Do carry ID if you want the guided tour ticket, because a valid ID is held as a deposit for the audio device.

Don't

  • Don't plan to leave and come back, because tickets are single entry, non-transferable and non-refundable with no re-entry.
  • Don't bring a selfie stick, tripod, monopod or drone, because the official site bans all of them along with flash and live-streaming equipment.
  • Don't expect to photograph every hall, because photography is banned in designated areas of the Tutankhamun galleries and commercial shooting needs prior written approval.
  • Don't visit in Ramadan expecting evening hours, because one guide says gallery hours shorten to 9:00 to 16:00 in that month.
