Pyramids of Giza Tour: The Complete Plateau Guide

A pyramids of Giza tour is a standard stop on the Cairo-based luxury Egypt tours, and it is the one where tickets, hours and scams confuse people most. This page covers the three pyramids and the Sphinx in figures, the plateau ticket and the separate interior tickets from the ministry price list, the conflicts between sources, opening hours, what going inside the Great Pyramid actually involves, the Panorama point, and what a guided tour adds. The Grand Egyptian Museum, 2 km away, has its own page. The bookable tours are compared on Luxury Egypt.

Quick answer The short answer

The ministry price list shows the foreign adult plateau ticket at EGP 700, with a separate Great Pyramid interior ticket at EGP 1,000. The ministry list gives 7:00 to 17:00 for the site, and the interior closes 12:00 to 13:00. Independent visitors pay those fees directly. Guided private trips such as the 3-Day Private Cairo Pyramids Tour at $441 per person bundle transport, a private guide and entrance fees to the sites it lists, but not entry inside the pyramids.

Key takeaways

The Giza Plateau in Figures

Three pyramids, a Sphinx and a workers' village sit on a UNESCO site of 16,203.36 hectares, inscribed in 1979. The complex lies about 13 km southwest of downtown Cairo and about 9 km west of the Nile.

The Three Pyramids

Khufu's Great Pyramid was built around 2600 BC in roughly 26 years and was the world's tallest human-made structure for over 3,700 years. It holds an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks and about 5.5 million tonnes of limestone, with fine white casing stone brought by barge from Tura. Modern historians estimate 20,000 to 30,000 year-round workers, and builders' tombs found in 1990 held beer and bread, which supports the paid-labour theory. The three pyramids align to the cardinal points within one-fifteenth of a degree. Khafre's pyramid looks taller than Khufu's because it stands on bedrock about 10 m higher, and it is the only one of the three still holding casing stones at the top.

The figures below come from the Wikipedia articles on each monument. The Khufu complex also carries three queens' pyramids numbered G1-a, G1-b and G1-c, and Khufu's valley temple lies buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman.

The Great Sphinx

The Sphinx is carved straight from the plateau bedrock, a Mokattam Formation limestone, and its head is cut from harder stone than its softer, more eroded body. Traces of red, yellow and blue pigment survive on it. The nose has been missing since at least the 10th century, and Frederic Louis Norden's 1737 drawings already show it without one.

Chisel marks show Napoleon's troops did not remove it. Thutmose IV set up the Dream Stele between the paws around 1400 BC, and the first modern dig around the Sphinx was led by Giovanni Caviglia in 1817. Emile Baraize sealed a fissure with iron bars, limestone and cement in 1926, and a concrete collar was added between headdress and neck in 1931.

The nearby Sphinx temple was built from stones cut out of the Sphinx enclosure and was never completed.

Going Inside the Great Pyramid

Interior entry is a separate ticket on top of the plateau ticket, it closes for an hour at midday, and it is not for everyone. Wikivoyage describes the pyramid interiors as hot, humid, cramped and claustrophobic, which is accurate.

Interior Tickets and the Conflicts

The ministry price list puts the Khufu interior at EGP 1,000 for foreign adults and EGP 500 for students, and the Khafre and Menkaure interiors at EGP 280 each, EGP 140 for students. One independent guide instead lists Khufu at EGP 900 with Khafre at EGP 100 and Menkaure at EGP 200. A camera permit inside the pyramids is said to cost an extra EGP 300 to 500, per one ticket guide.

Two further wrinkles matter. Wikivoyage says interior tickets are limited each day and may sell out by mid-morning, which argues for arriving at the 7:00 opening. And a later Wikivoyage figure of LE1,500 for the Great Pyramid interior may mean the price has moved since the ministry list, so budget for the higher number.

Guards at the gates tear the ticket and hand it back, and Wikivoyage is blunt that anything else is a scam.

The Route Through the Pyramid

Most visitors enter through the Robbers' Tunnel, reportedly cut by Caliph al-Ma'mun around 832 AD. From there the ascending passage runs about 39 m at a height of only 1.05 m, so you crouch the whole way. It opens into the Grand Gallery, which rises steeply for about 47 m under a corbelled ceiling roughly 8.6 m high.

Three chambers are known: an unfinished subterranean chamber cut into the bedrock, the Queen's Chamber, and the King's Chamber. The King's Chamber is built of red granite brought more than 800 km from Aswan and holds Khufu's empty granite sarcophagus. The whole pyramid used 5.5 million tonnes of limestone and 8,000 tonnes of granite.

Hours and the Midday Closure

The ministry price list gives the plateau 7:00 to 17:00 and closes the Khufu interior from 12:00 to 13:00. One travel site instead lists 8:00 to 17:00 in summer and 8:00 to 16:00 in winter, and Wikivoyage separately notes winter closing at 16:00. The safe plan is to enter at opening, do the interior before the midday closure, and be off the plateau by late afternoon.

Wikivoyage also says the plateau is busiest with Egyptian visitors on Fridays, so early arrival matters even more that day. Climbing the pyramids is strictly illegal and dangerous. If you want to see Khufu's solar boat, a 43.4 m cedar vessel found in 1954 and moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum in August 2021, plan the Grand Egyptian Museum as a same-day stop, it stands about 2 km from the complex.

Giza Tickets and Hours

The plateau and each pyramid interior are priced separately, and the published figures disagree between sources. This section lays out the ministry price list and the conflicts side by side.

What Each Ticket Costs

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities publishes the official figures below. Foreign students pay half on every line. The ministry also lists parking at EGP 25 for a car, EGP 75 for a minibus and EGP 100 for a bus.

Two sources disagree with the official list. Wikivoyage puts the Great Pyramid interior at LE1,500 against the ministry's EGP 1,000. For the plateau itself, a Cairo360 article lists EGP 540 against the ministry's EGP 700. For the Khafre and Menkaure interiors, an Egypt Tours Plus guide gives EGP 100 and EGP 200 where the ministry gives EGP 280 each. Budget for the higher figure and treat anything less as a bonus. One ticket guide adds that a camera permit inside the pyramids costs an extra EGP 300 to 500, and Wikivoyage warns that interior tickets are limited each day and may sell out by mid-morning.

Opening Hours and Best Timing

The ministry price list gives 7:00 to 17:00 for the Giza Necropolis. GlobalHighlights gives 8:00 to 17:00 in summer and 8:00 to 16:00 in winter. Wikivoyage also mentions winter closing at 16:00. Go with 7:00 or 8:00 and you will be safe either way.

Arrive at opening. Wikivoyage says the plateau is busiest with Egyptian visitors on Fridays and that early arrival beats the crowds. It also matters for the Khufu interior, because daily interior tickets can run out by mid-morning. The Khufu pyramid closes for an hour at midday under the ministry list.

Heat is the other argument for an early start. Cairo average highs reach 35.1 C in July against 19 C in January, and a climate guide names October to March as the best months for Cairo, Giza and Saqqara. Sandstorms between March and May can raise temperatures and dry the air. Carry water and a hat.

Adding Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur

Most pyramids of Giza tours pair the plateau with the older sites to the south, and the three fit easily into one long day.

Saqqara

Saqqara lies about 30 km south of Cairo by one count, though Rough Guides puts it about 40 km south of Cairo and 30 km from Giza. It was the necropolis of ancient Memphis, and the Step Pyramid of Djoser there is the first Egyptian pyramid and the oldest complete stone building complex known in history, built to a design by Imhotep. It reopened in March 2020 after a 14-year restoration, and tunnels beneath it total nearly 6 km around a central shaft 28 m deep. The Serapeum, the burial place of Apis bulls, was found by Auguste Mariette in 1851, and researchers reported almost eight million animal mummies in the Saqqara dog catacomb in 2011.

The ministry lists the Saqqara Area ticket at EGP 600 for foreign adults, open 8:00 to 17:00, though Rough Guides gives closing at 16:00. A Step Pyramid Complex ticket from the southern entrance costs EGP 280, the Serapeum EGP 340, the Tomb of Mereruka EGP 200, and a ticket for all Saqqara tombs EGP 1,000. Wikivoyage notes the Pepi I and Pepi II pyramid area is closed to tourism.

Memphis and Dahshur

Memphis sits about 20 km south of Cairo at the village of Mit Rahina, roughly 3 km east of Saqqara. The open-air museum shows a limestone colossus of Ramesses II about 10 m long, found in 1820. The ministry lists the Mit Rahina ticket at EGP 200 for foreign adults.

Dahshur is about 12 km south of Saqqara and costs EGP 200 for foreign adults, open 8:00 to 17:00 under the ministry list, though one guide gives EGP 60. It holds two of Sneferu's pyramids from 2613 to 2589 BC. The Bent Pyramid was his first attempt at a smooth-sided pyramid, and the Red Pyramid stands about 104 m tall at a 43 degree angle. Wikivoyage says the Red Pyramid has an entrance you can climb down inside. Wikivoyage estimates a taxi day covering Saqqara and Dahshur with admissions and lunch at about LE4,000. The 3-Day Private Cairo Pyramids Tour joins all three southern sites to Giza and Old Cairo in one private trip.

Which Tours Cover Giza

Most Cairo-based itineraries on this site include the Giza plateau, but what the price covers differs, and the honest differences matter.

What a Guided Tour Adds

A guide handles the ticket windows, the separate interior tickets, transport between the plateau, Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. On most of the private itineraries an Egyptologist guide leads the sightseeing. Private versus shared changes the day: shared groups run up to 18 people, while private itineraries set the pace and the order of sites.

Watch what the headline price leaves out. The 3-Day Private Cairo Pyramids Tour at $441 per person includes entrance fees to the sites on its itinerary, but entry inside the pyramids is not included, and the hotel is not included either. On the 7-Day Private Egyptologist Tour at $1,500, the Cairo hotel and both domestic flights cost extra, so the figure is a base. These are card prices in US dollars only.

Cairo to Luxor Itineraries That Start at Giza

One private multi-day option with Giza is the 8-Day Cairo Aswan Luxor Private Tour at $1,800 per person, rated 4.9 from 285 reviews. It covers Giza, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, then flies to Aswan for a 3-night 5-star cruise, and Abu Simbel is optional. The most complete version is the 12-Day Luxury Egypt Nile Tour at $6,527 per person, with 30 included entrance fees, domestic flights, Abu Simbel and Alexandria, though all sales are final.

For more on what separates a private itinerary from a shared one, and how the price of a luxury Egypt tour maps onto hotels, ships and flights, the homepage comparison lays the listings side by side. The Grand Egyptian Museum, 2 km from the plateau, now holds Khufu's solar boat, and it has its own guide page.

Giza Tour Tips

Practical advice for a pyramids of Giza tour, each point drawn from the recorded sources.

Do

  • Do go at opening, 7:00 or 8:00, because early arrival beats the crowds and interior tickets for the Great Pyramid may sell out by mid-morning.
  • Do carry some Egyptian pounds, because the plateau ticket alone is EGP 700 and each interior is priced separately.
  • Do walk west of the pyramids to the Panorama viewpoint, because Wikivoyage recommends it for desert views of all three pyramids together.
  • Do agree horse prices and head counts before setting off, because Wikivoyage tells riders to do exactly that to avoid disputes afterwards.
  • Do bring warm clothing if you stay for the sound and light show at the Sphinx gate, where the English showing runs at 19:00 in winter and 19:30 in summer for about LE130.

Don't

  • Don't climb the pyramids, because Wikivoyage says it is dangerous and strictly illegal.
  • Don't accept any unsolicited favour at Giza, because Wikivoyage warns it may expect a tip in return, and guards only tear the ticket and hand it back, so anything else is a scam.
  • Don't believe a guide who claims an attraction is closed, because Wikivoyage warns of touts who use that line to steer visitors elsewhere.
  • Don't plan the Great Pyramid interior around midday, because the ministry list closes it from 12:00 to 13:00.

Pyramids of Giza Tour FAQ

How much does it cost to get into the Pyramids of Giza?

The ministry price list gives a Giza Necropolis plateau ticket of EGP 700 for foreign adults and EGP 350 for students, with each pyramid interior priced separately. The figures and their conflicts are in the tickets section above, and the 3-Day Private Cairo Pyramids Tour includes entrance fees to the sites on its route, though not the pyramid interiors.

What time should I visit the Giza pyramids?

The ministry lists 7:00 to 17:00 and other sources give 8:00 opening, so aim for opening time, since early arrival beats the crowds and Great Pyramid interior tickets can sell out by mid-morning. October to March is the most comfortable season for a pyramids of Giza tour.

How do I visit the pyramids from Cairo?

The complex lies about 13 km southwest of downtown Cairo. Wikivoyage notes buses and microbuses currently stop 500 m before the old Mena Gate because of construction, and metro riders to Giza station can take microbuses 355 or 357 west for about LE7. Many first-time visitors take a private itinerary such as the 3-Day Private Cairo Pyramids Tour instead.

Can I go inside the Great Pyramid?

Yes, with a separate ticket of EGP 1,000 for foreign adults under the ministry list, though Wikivoyage gives LE1,500. Inside, the ascending passage is about 1.05 m tall and you crouch for roughly 39 m before the Grand Gallery rises for about 47 m to the King's Chamber. The full description is in the section on entering the pyramids.

Where is the solar boat now?

Khufu's solar boat, about 43.4 m long and built of Lebanon cedar from 1,224 pieces, was moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum in August 2021. The museum sits about 2 km from the plateau and has its own page at Grand Egyptian Museum.

Is it worth adding Saqqara and Dahshur to a Giza tour?

Yes, because Saqqara holds the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the first Egyptian pyramid, and Dahshur holds Sneferu's Bent and Red pyramids, with ministry tickets of EGP 600 and EGP 200 for foreign adults. Saqqara lies about 3 km west of Memphis and 12 km north of Dahshur, so the three fit one day, as the 3-Day Private Cairo Pyramids Tour shows.

The 3-Day Private Cairo Pyramids Tour covers Giza, Saqqara, Memphis, Dahshur and Old Cairo with 3 lunches and free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, for $441 per person.

Private group available, rated 5 from 8 reviews on the booking platform. Pyramid interiors and hotels are not included in the price.
